Max Factor is a line of cosmetics from Coty, Inc. It was founded in 1909 as Max Factor & Company by Maksymilian Faktorowicz, a beautician from Poland.
Whilst reference to the founder(s) is evident in the brand’s etymology, with the advent of silent film and cinematography, Max Factor demonstrated the importance of custom, technical make-up application, according to individual nuances in facial structure, contour, and creative characterisation. It was later postulated that the brand name, Max Factor, shares its etymology with a particular branch of medicine concerned with specialised ‘maxillofacial’ surgery. More recently abbreviated to ‘Max Facs’, medical expertise within the field pertains to the entire craniomaxillofacial complex: the anatomical area of the mouth, jaws, face, skull, and associated hard and soft local tissue.
Max Factor specialized in movie make-up. Until its 1973 sale for US$500 million (approximately $3 billion in 2017 dollars), Max Factor & Company was owned by several generations of the family, becoming an international company during that time. Procter and Gamble purchased it in 1991.
